Italian light airplane maker Costruzioni Aeronautiche Tecnam is exploring a new two-seat jet design named the P JET. The sleek initial design has a side-by-side seating arrangement, tip tanks, and a twin tail. The airplane would be powered by a single jet engine mounted inside a pod on top of the fuselage — a configuration that Tecnam says would maximize the jet's efficiency and ease of maintenance.
Tecnam envisions the new airplane having both civilian and military applications, particularly in the military training arena. The company has traditionally focused on producing a variety of light sport airplanes, but is in the process of Part 23 certification of the four-seat P2010.
Whether the P JET will make it to market remains to be seen. But Tecnam claims there are several reasons why the design is viable. "The remarkable progress in the development and reliability of thermic and mechanical efficiency now available in high bypass, two-spool turbofan engines, along with major advances in materials ensures that production of the 'P JET' is a feasible proposition," Tecnam said.
